Katherine M. Markowski, Esq.
Katherine (Katie) Markowski is an associate in the litigation department of Hooper, Lundy & Bookman. Ms. Markowski’s practice focuses on complex business litigation on behalf of hospitals and other health care providers in both court and arbitration, with an emphasis on managed care disputes. Ms. Markowski’s practice involves many areas relevant to health care law, including California’s Health and Safety Code, the Knox Keene Act, ERISA litigation, RICO actions, HIPAA, and numerous other substantive areas. Ms. Markowski also has significant litigation experience in the areas of reinsurance litigation, securities litigation, and tax-related litigation.
Ms. Markowski received a Bachelor of Arts degree, with distinction, in French Studies and International Studies from Colby College, Waterville, Maine, in 2005. Ms. Markowski received her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 2008, where she was a member of the University of Chicago Law Review, the Mandel Legal Aid Clinic’s Irwin Askow Housing Initiative, and the Willem C. Vis International Arbitration Moot Court team.
Bars and Courts
Ms. Markowski has been admitted to the California Bar since 2011 and the Illinois Bar since 2008. Ms. Markowski is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the United States District Courts for the Central and Northern Districts of California, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
Ms. Markowski joined Hooper, Lundy & Bookman in August 2011. She previously was a litigation associate, focusing on disputes within the reinsurance industry, in the Chicago offices of Foley & Lardner LLP and Lovells LLP (now known as Hogan Lovells).
Pro Bono Experience
Ms. Markowski is firmly committed to pro bono service. She has represented a criminal defendant in his appeal before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, has advised Save the Children UK on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and represents workers who have been denied unemployment insurance benefits in their appeals before the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board. She also is an active volunteer in the community with the Junior League of Los Angeles.
